(Pretty sure I’ve noted this before, but …) The way these people and their supporters talk suggests a mildly depressing reality: that most people, even educated people, have a fundamentally mystical view of science, perhaps of knowledge more broadly. They have faith that what scientists say is true, the same–not just similar, same–faith that the religious have in scripture and sutra. Acceptance of apparently impossible or contradictory propositions is virtuous. Accepting the contradiction of the Trinity is the same for most people as acceptance of evolution by natural selection, of relativity, of quantum mechanics, of Newtonian physics, of heliocentrism, or of the shape of the Earth. It’s all internalized the same way.
If he means his hormones when he says body chemistry, almost certainly not, unless he is taking too much estrogen. But his DNA is part of his body chemistry. I’m willing to bet Martina has twice as many X chromosomes as he has. And a real vagina, uterus, ovaries (though I realize she may not have all of them anymore, that doesn’t change the reality of biology), so his body anatomy is not as female as hers, either. His vagina isn’t a real vagina, it’s an inside out penis. Hers is a vagina.
Now look at me, I’m doing something I never wanted to do – discussing Martina by her bodily parts. I usually reserve such discussions for Biology class, but unfortunately Willoughby needs some emergency lessons in human biology.
