A patriotic copy

Ew.

Former President Donald Trump is officially selling a patriotic copy of the Christian Bible themed to Lee Greenwood’s famous song, “God Bless the USA.”

“Happy Holy Week!” Trump announced on social media Tuesday, during the most solemn period of the Christian calendar, the last week of the Lenten season marking the suffering and death of Jesus. “As we lead into Good Friday and Easter, I encourage you to get a copy of the God Bless The USA Bible.”

Patriotism n Bibleism n corruption n greed n sadistic bullying – what a package!

    I saw that news, but I missed the part about the patriotic theme. Is this the one that includes the verse “And on the eighth day, the Lord created AMERICA, and he saw that it was GREAT!” (It helps to read that in a Tony the Tiger voice.)

    I have performed that execrable song “God Bless the USA” several times; probably the last time predates the Trump administration. I hope never to see it again. I cannot imagine having the stomach to deal with it. It’s bad enough playing for one of the municipal functions for Rah Rah Military Day (one each in May, July, and November, with occasional others) with people wearing MAGA caps. I’ve begged off of participating in some of those performances (“schedule conflict”).

    The promo video is unintentionally funny, especially when he fluffs his lines and says “We must offend God in the public square”. He also says “All Americans need a Bible in their home, and I have many. It’s my favorite book,” Really, Don?

    Then again, the slogan is somewhat chilling: ‘Make America Pray Again’! Mandatory religion, huh?

    Comes complete with copies of the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence and the Pledge of Allegiance, as well as a handwritten chorus of the famous Greenwood song.

    The video is at the link below (it’s subtitled so you don’t need to listen.

    Interesting that the “patriotic” Bible uses the King James version.

    And they’ve conveniently included the Constitution, so perhaps readers will see the bit about not establishing religion.

    It’s the “Trump Constitution”, similar in spirit to the “Jefferson Bible”, with the parts he dislikes cut out.

    Note that, like so many things Trumpian, this is grift on multiple levels. Sure, he’s getting his rank-and-file supporters to fork over more cash for these bibles. But I would bet anything that most of the sales will be to Evangelical churches, as a way of bypassing the federal laws against direct support for political campaigns by 401c non-profits.

    Freemage, this is from the link in my comment above;

    The Bible’s website states the product “is not political and has nothing to do with any political campaign.”

    “GodBlessTheUSABible.com is not owned, managed or controlled by Donald J. Trump, The Trump Organization, CIC Ventures LLC or any of their respective principals or affiliates,” it says.

    Instead, it says, “GodBlessTheUSABible.com uses Donald J. Trump’s name, likeness and image under paid license from CIC Ventures LLC, which license may be terminated or revoked according to its terms.”

    CIC Ventures LLC, a company that Trump reported owning in his 2023 financial disclosure, has a similar arrangement with 45Footwear, which also says it uses Trump’s “name, likeness and image under paid license from CIC Ventures LLC, which license may be terminated or revoked according to its terms.”

    A Trump spokesperson and God Bless the USA Bible did not immediately respond to questions about how much Trump was paid for the licensing deal or stands to make from each book sale.

    Make of that what you will.

    @WaM #4:

    I’d read that the King James version is public domain unlike NIV or similar.

    There is a movement among conservative American Christians that deems the KJV as the perfect and only acceptable Bible.

    Does that mean that God stopped “guiding” or guaranteeing English translations in the early 17th century? Do they have a memo with his initials covering that? What about the sources from which it was translated? I know the old apocryphal quote that has some fundamentalist yokel allegedly saying something like “If the English language was good enough for Jesus Christ, it’s good enough for me,” but this “sanctification” of the KJV is ridiculous. Sounds like Koran envy.
