This strikes me as a completely pro-forma response, and at the very worst it’s in the vicinity of being the correct one.

Enzyme, that may be so, but it seems like acts of public violence are within the responsibilities of any news outlet to report on. If nothing else, it helps keep people safe from being caught in the middle of the violence.
The BBC website has devoted a whopping thirteen sentences to the story. Well, eleven about the vandalism and the obligatory two about JK Rowling.

Yes – they are within reporting responsibilities. But that doesn’t mean that people who call the newsdesk are entitled to a bespoke response.
