Geneva officials now out of breath from laughing

She sure does look asexual, doesn’t she! More asexual than a nun, more asexual than a sweaty exhausted athlete, more asexual than a coal miner after a double shift.

What, you haven’t heard? A sexuality is like, *so hot right now*. Hence the hair, make up, short skirt and pose. Being hot is what asexuality is all about, like how nuns are hot for god, athletes are hot for sports, and coal miners are so hot for coal AND double shifts. Sex sells, as they say, and you can’t sell a super unsexy sexuality. Next, to make prudes hot…

    WTF.

It’s like addressing the UN about the importance of the “hobby” of not collecting stamps. Beyond “I don’t collect stamps,” or “I’m not personally interested in pursuing a sexual relationship with anybody,” what is there to say? Ignoring the entire topic and saying nothing would be equally useful, and would waste less time.

I’d quibble about “saying nothing” being merely “equally useful”; to me it appears that usefulness is increased to the point of calling for appointment to some UN spokesperson roles from closed lists composed entirely of Finns!

Yasmin Benoît’s been at it for years, and I still don’t know what she’s campaigning for. On a personal level she obviously wants attention and modelling work, but I can’t figure out the asexual endgame. Everybody already has the right not to have any sex they don’t want; that’s rape, which is a crime and rightly so.

I suspect – just a wild hunch, you know – she’s doing it for the attention.

From the outside it certainly looks like these “Aces” are just sad people who can’t think of any other way to get attention — but can anybody “steelman” it for me? What are they complaining about, and what are they asking us to be doing about it?

Looks like a power trip to me. “Hey over here, look at me!” Then shoots them down with the “asexual” or “aromantic” rhetoric. Ha ha, fooled ya! Definitely some kind of tease dynamic. And yes, attention? Plenty.

If I were to steelman the issue, I’d talk about things like society and culture being drenched in sex, sexuality, and the notion that everyone wants some, is getting some, trying to get more, and loving it. That being a sexual being that’s interested in, and having sex is the obvious norm, and that not wanting any, ever, is deemed abnormal, and in need of fixing. Everyone has access to pornography of all kinds on the phone in their pocket. That stating you have no interest in sex goes down about as well as declaring that Liam is only hot for dudes at the church picnic – everyone goes silent. I’d guess that asexuals are keen to be viewed as just as normal as straight married people, many of whom, are functionally asexual companions anyway, they’d just rather not get married to look normal.

If you look at it like gay rights from long ago, it makes no sense, as asexuality was never banned (nuns and monks and priests even did it on purpose, and were celebrated for it). But if you look at it like gay rights from more like the 1990s, when Pride was a celebration and the concerns surfaced more about being seen as normal relationships, just like straight relationships, so people would feel comfortable with being gay, or interacting with gay people, it makes more sense.
