Man who doesn’t care

When people with important human rights roles have nothing but contempt for the rights of women.

Easy for him to say.

“Segregated toilets.” There’s a sly dog-whistle, implying that woman who only want women in their toilets are the same as white people who supported Jim Crow.

Mostly Cloudy, it isn’t just implied, many TRAs are more than happy to say it out loud. I have seen opposition to trans inclusion labelled as both ‘repackaged racism’ and ‘repackaged homophobia’ because apparently the same arguments are used to exclude TIMs that were used to argue against the racial equality and gay rights.

Acolyte, and sometimes they leave off the ‘repackaged’. They just flat out accuse anyone questioning gender ideology of racism, I suppose hoping no one thinks about it too hard. “Wait, what doe race have to do with it? How did race get in there?”

    iknklast, it goes like this:

Gender critical woman: Trans women do not belong in our spaces.

TRA: Oh my god! Say that again but replace ‘trans’ with ‘Black’ and ‘our’ with white. Does that sound familiar to you? You bigots are only saying it about trans folk because you’re not allowed to say it about Black people any more. Racist!!!

Note that the vast, vast majority of ‘gender neutral toilets’ I’ve ever encountered were, essentially, a single stall with a full-size door, and either just a toilet, or a toilet and urinal sharing the same general space. Most notably, they’re clearly meant to be single-occupancy, or perhaps someplace where a parent can keep their kid with them while using the restroom.

Of course such spaces don’t result in an increase in threats to women, because they’re the polar opposite of the standard single-sex public restroom, which usually features doors and stall walls that go from one foot off the ground up to about two feet below the ceiling, with wide gaps on the hinges, and a ‘lock’ that can be forced open with a strong breeze–and, if a men’s room, a row of urinals that may or may not have a short piece of metal sticking out of the wall between them.

If trans activists were just asking for an increase in the percentage of the former type of public accommodation, I’d be marching right there with them.

(I work in a retail establishment with the latter sort of toilets. This totally men-only domain regularly has a long piece of toilet paper shoved into the top stall-door hinges, in order to cover the aforementioned hinge-gap. So if men are reluctant to let other men spy on them, why should women not be?)

    Good point!

    Also interesting.

Speaking of spying…I’ve heard that many women are reluctant to use the unisex bathrooms you’re describing because it’s easy for men who use them to install small cameras in them.

    Let’s not forget:

    a. “The stereotypical woman is not just imagined to be cis, but also white, straight, able-bodied, neurotypical, etc. etc.”

    b. “Your arguments against gender ideology in general would also have to apply to this particular transwoman who happens to be non-white, therefore racism.”

    And of course:

    c. “Here is a non-white person who happens to agree with me. If you disagree with me, you also disagree with them. According to Standpoint Theory it is inherently oppressive (and an act of ‘epistemic violence’) for a white person like yourself to disagree with a non-white person* for any reason, therefore racism.”

    * Unless, of course, they’re “white adjacent”, suffering from internalized bigotry against their own kind, traitors siding with the oppressor in exchange for a more favorable treatment etc. as they have to be to disagree with me Theory.
