At long last, Jolyon, have you no sense of shame? Do you never stop to wonder why you keep filming yourself telling people to hate and damage institutions you don’t like?

What I don’t get (one thing about him I don’t get) is why and how he doesn’t see how skin-crawlingly awful he is when he watches himself talking shit like this. It’s not as if it’s subtle.

He’s a bit like Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess of Grantham. Pompous, de haut en bas, profoundly satisfied with Self. The Dowager, however, had some charm along with the pomposity. Joly on the other hand is nothing but pomposity.

    I subscribe to three of the four, so not quite a full house, but I’m clearly very much part of Joylon’s target demographic. I look forward to finding out whether any of this paid advertising actually reaches me, and if so, whether it makes any arguments that I find at all persuasive or appealing. I strongly suspect that the money spent will go straight down the drain, as it does with most of the GLP’s campaigns.

    How would that paid-for advertising campaign work? Nobody is under any obligation to run an advert, and I suspect that nobody would run this. So who’d he be paying? Apart from himself, I mean?

    I think the plan to help finance media outlets that publish articles he dislikes, by purchasing advertising in them, is a good one and can’t fail. Jolyon is surely England’s finest legal mind.

    Stage one is announcing he will run a paid advertising campaign against those media venues, stage two is announcing no one will run his ad campaign because those venues refused to carry ads due to the obvious dishonesty, ahem, because other venues refuse to carry those ads for fear of libel lawsuits from those venues, hold on, recalibrating spin machine… because the world hates trans people. Always always be the victim.

    Also, while Jason Arday’s death was a tragedy, Maugham’s response to it is unhinged even by Maugham’s standards.

    Jason Arday suffered horribly as a result of a toxic culture war; with actual racists taking the opportunity to openly express their racism whilst others whipped up the ante, and didn’t help him at all, by shouting racist at anyone asking legitimate questions about his research. The Good Law Project, of course, was involved from the get-go, immediately publishing an outraged proclamation of innocence which was easily shot down and just added fuel to the fire. Maugham makes a good living from whipping up culture wars and I doubt if he’s ever reflected for one moment over whether his brand of sanctimonious hyperbole helps anyone.

    He makes a good living from it AND he gets to make endless videos of himself pompously pompizing to Save The World.
