Statue of feminist poet in peril?

Hmm.

Right now in my home city (in the UK) the statue of a feminist poet is being torn down simply because she is white… all because a black criminal was murdered by a white cop in the USA. This madness is tearing society apart. It has to stop. 2/2

I tried Google News and Google – nothing. The closest Google can find to “white feminist poet statue torn down” is ” Bristol mayor: Colston statue removal was act of ‘historical poetry‘” from the Guardian…which is not close at all.

The conversation started with Annoying’s annoyance at me for tweeting that Trump is threatening protesters, because hey, he didn’t say a word about threatening them.

Right, and when a man says to a woman “I’m not going to treat you the way all those pussies you used to date did” she has absolutely no reason to think that’s a threat.

Pretty sure we have no statues of feminist poets in the UK. Inventory here:

Yes I was thinking that later, while out and about – statue of a feminist woman poet? Seriously? How many statues of feminist women are there? How many statues of women are there? Not very damn many; thank you CCP.

Could this be a reference to the story that “defenders” were protecting the statue of George Eliot in Nuneaton from iconoclasts? Though not primarily known as a poet, she was a feminist who wrote poetry.

As a matter of curiosity, Ophelia, what is the CCP you are thanking? (Please excuse my ignorance if it’s obvious and I didn’t know.)

Ah could be – I was unaware of that. (Why on earth was anyone going after Marian Evans aka George Eliot? She was quite a radical in many ways. Will seek non-DM source.)

CCP is Caroline Criado-Perez, she who got that statue of Millicent Fawcett happen.

Ah I see – no one was going after the statue, but some people thought they might (for no known reason) so they protected it. Then everyone went home for tea.

    Very British of them.

Thank you Ophelia – when I see “CCP” these days I mostly think Chinese Communist Party, and I’d be a little worried if you were grateful to them.

Heh. To me, CCP is Code of Civil Procedure.
