Queer as Folk stars Jesse James Keitel and CG have a simple message to people who don’t think trans people should exist: “Fuck you.”
Except of course that’s not what we think. It’s not about existing, it’s about claims about what one is. It’s about self-description. It’s about the new and worthless doctrine that people can change their sex, and not only that but they can do it just by saying the words. Existence isn’t the same as self-description. Exist away, exist your socks off, but if you start up a new ideology that says you’re a Dilophosaurus then we get to say your ideology is stupid and wrong. Bonus: you still exist.
Two decades ago, Queer as Folk came along and changed the game for gay representation on television – but today, it’s glaringly obvious that it didn’t represent the breadth and depth of the LGBTQ+ experience.
In other words we hadn’t yet smeared trans all over everything but now we know better.
I don’t think gender identity should be lumped together with sexual orientation. Fuck me.
What are you going to do about it, call me a transphobe? Fuck you too.
The whole “trans people don’t deserve to exist” thing is the strawiest of strawmen. It actually just makes me laugh now, whenever I see it being used as justification for hating on all the normies. “Don’t you GET IT?! THEY DON’T THINK WE DESERVE TO EXIST!!!!1!!!” *faint* *collapse*
Sure, trans people exist, how could we explain all the people masquerading as the opposite sex otherwise? But if you’re going to deny ontology, them my weaponized epistemology will have something to say about it. :P
They are perhaps confusing “There are no people who meet a particular common definition of ‘trans’ ” with “Those of us who do meet this definition of ‘trans’ are not allowed to exist” (whatever that means). For “trans” as “woman/man in man/woman’s body”, no, there are no such people, and those who claim otherwise are mistaken. Being mistaken is not the same thing as not existing. But “not allowed to exist”, with it’s not-subtle-at-all implication that people will be rounded up and executed?
A high school classmate once asserted that there was no such thing as an atheist. I said I am an atheist, and we had a discussion. At no time did I assume her assertion was a threat that atheists aren’t allowed to exist, or that I was in any danger from her; she just thought I was mistaken.
“Trans” is a predicate. That is, it’s a property that either is or is not true of some entity a.
Existence is a quantifier. That is, it indicates that there’s an interpretation of some entity variable(s) that satisfies a well formed subformula.
I literally can’t write a direct formalization of “trans people don’t exist,” because that would require using existence as a predicate. I’d have to write it like, “there does not exist a p such that p is trans.” Negative existentials are equivalent to positive universals, which give the much more straightforward, “for all p, p isn’t trans.”
So there you go. TERFs think trans people are universally positive.
I mean, it’s about as intellectually honest as saying we think trans people don’t exist, just a little bit more erudite.
Is anyone actually watching this though? Is this gonna be another cancelled after one season style of thing?
I have $20 that says that the show will never address the homophobia inherent in the transgender movement.

A small cautionary note. I absolutely agree that GCFs are not saying trans people should not exist. But there are legitimately transphobic individuals out there, among the socio-religious conservative set, who absolutely would be happy to make that statement, and furthermore would like very much to take actions to achieve that goal.
So if you tell trans people and their advocates that no one is arguing they shouldn’t exist, then you’re overreaching, and end up undermining your own credibility, because they can absolutely see a group of people who would like to wipe them off the face of the planet.

Good point. I had a brief interaction on twitter with a trans person who claimed that “you (plural) want us to not exist!”, in the context of violence against trans people. I had been trying to make the point that there is no instance of gender critical persons (women or men) resorting to violence, but that there were plenty of examples of trans people indulging in “die cis scum”-type attacks against GC people. It was at that point that my interlocutor made that statement. I responded, very carefully, with “show me one example of a gender critical person engaging in violence against you or any trans people, or saying that you don’t have a right to exist–and I don’t mean Tucker Carlson or any of his bizarre acolytes”. There was no response, so perhaps I managed to put a little wedge in his mind between those truly hateful/violent right-wing types, and those of us who are just GC.
There are of course actual transphobes, and these transphobes are also racists, homophobes, and misogynists. They are the usual extreme right wing xenophobe suspects: religious types who have God Almighty on their side. Fortunately there are very few of them in the big scheme of things. The trouble is, *anyone* who denies the trans cult agenda is labeled as a transphobe by the trans cult, even if they are liberal minded. The term is so misapplied that it has become meaningless. The trans cultists use “cis” and “transphobe” synonymously. Both are used as insults, mostly by twitter trolls who think they are morally superior to people who don’t subscribe to their rubbish.
