Our power lies in organization

The Industrial Workers of the World, aka the Wobblies, had the power fist back in the teens of the 20th century.

It’s not appropriation for any left-wing movement to use the fist. What would be appropriation would be for right-wing movements to use it, or for WalMart or CocaCola to use it for advertising, as I’m sure they have.

I wonder if it was at all inspired by the “Boxer Rebellion”

It seems to be a lot older than that and has been used by a surprising number of groups…

I think the current complaint is more about the combination of fist and venus, which I think originated somewhere in the sixties.

It did; I remember it. There were buttons. I think I may have had one.

But what about the symbol of the fist inside the woman’s symbol specifically, where did that come from? I know you say it’s all feminism not black feminism but did it originate with NOW or some specific feminist activist or what?

That I don’t know. Maybe it was one of those things that occurred to a lot of people at once. The power fist was everywhere then.

I have a “vintage” button from the 1960s or early 70s with that logo on it. It’s surrounded by the words Power, Choice and Equality. The logo is in black but the rest of the button is pink and green. It was my mother’s and she has a picture of her holding me as a toddler while she’s wearing it. It must have been 1969 or 1970.
