    I realize it’s a rhetorical setup for the misogynist insult, but what a bizarre position to hold: ‘I am a woman because I say I am and you have to accept that or else…”

    Or else what?

    Isn’t it usually “You can believe what you want, but you can’t act a certain way”? Rather than the other way around?

    So. Um. “I’m a woman” and a woman is “An adult member of the female sex”, yet also – somehow – people can become female by declaration and hormones.

    Again with the reducing of an actual woman to her genitalia.

    And Rachel Dolezal is Black.

    At least she didn’t claim that real black people were committing genocide if they raised an eyebrow.

    How do you write “Actually you aren’t free to believe that” and not think, wait, maybe at some point I took a wrong turn if this is where I ended up?

    That ship sailed long ago. My departure from Freethought Blogs began with being asked, in a very peremptory fashion, “do you believe trans women are women, yes or no?” I could have just ignored the question, but the brazen authoritarianism of it set off all my “must argue back” reflexes.

    @Ophelia

    Yeah, I remember that exactly. It doesn’t get any less bizarre or any less of a shitshow with time.

    Yes, I recall your thoroughly aggressive reply. Something along the lines of ‘That question is too nuanced for a “yes/no” answer’

    You beast!

    So unreasonable!

    Well Ophelia did apparently like something on Facebook posted by someone who once drank a latte made by a known TERF. So, quand on fait son lit…

    And Ophelia expressed mild amusement at Otherkin, which is of course trans-speciesphobic.

    Remember when Greta Christina made a post about not combing through people’s liked pages, twitter follows and other minutiae because doing so is prone to divisiveness and misunderstandings? A month or two after participating in exactly that? Good times.

    Now you remind us I do, but I’d forgotten it.
