On the way

Just activism, right?

femboy has locked Their account, which is shocking, because femboy should have been ejected from Twitter altogether.

If any tweet could be considered threatening, sure this one is it. Right, coppers?

What’s sad is that the woman who tweeted this has all but vanished herself online because of threats like this, along with intimidation and harassment from the usual TRA suspects. Such threats may not be taken seriously by the police, but their targets can’t blithely dismiss them.

Dr. P.Z. Myers has proclaimed that the doxxing of Rowling is…well, one ought *not* to, but in this case, welllll….”okay, okay, tsk, tsk” says he. She’s rich, though, and a public figure, so, well, says Dr. M., she deserves to burn, the witch.

There is simply no opportunity PZ Myers will pass up to beclown(fish) himself on this issue. He has set a precedent and cultivated an audience which would turn on him at the drop of a hat if he hesitates to mouth the approved words. It’s as if the emperor were a slave to the court, rather than the other way around. Someone should get around to writing an Emperor’s Reply one of these days.

Christ the night, I’ve just read PZ’s post. If anything, you understate his auto-beclowning.

PZ knows better than most that doxxing is not only about revealing personal information. It’s also about revealing personal information with intent to threaten or intimidate or incite.

I’ve never tried to hide my identity online. I use the pseudonym ‘latsot’ because that’s what I typed in when some long dead site asked me for one and because it was the name of a company I owned at the time. I have deliberately not made it especially difficult for anyone to find out who I am, if they really want to, and I’ve publicly ‘come out’ in support of women who can’t on a number of occasions*. I continue using latsot only because, frankly, I’m latsot as much as I’m anything. I guess I identify as latsot. I’ve considered switching to my real name, but you’ll admit that Rob Smith is spectacularly boring and Robert just gets me confused with 80s musicians.

I’m not hiding in the least, but I’ve still been doxxed a few times. People sent my personal details, including my name and address, to people who very definitely meant me harm. On one occasion, people threatened to track down my (then) young nephew and niece and do some unspecified horrible (online) thing to them. I’ve had people contact my (then) employer to try to get me fired. If you go to the slymepit, you’ll find pages and pages (like, hundreds) dedicated to the dissection of my character, many (many) failings, work and personal details. And I am absolutely nobody with nothing but a scant handful of Twitter followers and a talent for really pissing people off, apparently.

All of this was and is publicly available information, used in these instances to threaten, intimidate or incite. It was doxxing. Absolutely, it was doxxing.

What these people did to JKR was doxxing too. PZ knows this perfectly well, few better. He’s lying. He’s lying for the adoration of his remaining sycophants. And he doesn’t care at all about consequences to anyone at all beyond that.

He knows that this was not OK and he’s lying about it because he enjoys being celebrated by strangers. And, worst of all, I think, he’s digging the hole he’s in deeper just because it’s very slightly easier than digging back up. I’ve no doubt at all left that he knows what he’s doing. I think the last shred left me when he went after Marion Millar and accepted the unrelentingly awful NotCursedE’s description of events as fact. Sorry, PZ, but I do not believe that you, developmental biologist of many years and (former) skeptic of some deserved standing, believe the shit you say.

I had a health checkup recently and my arteries seem to be relatively clear of obstructions despite my advanced age, but I know without an instant’s doubt that they would all rupture at once if I read the comments to that post. For once, I am not even curious.

I’ll be ‘coming out’ again, by the way, as gender critical on Gender Critical Coming Out Day, again in support of people who can’t.

I’m writing A Thing that I’ll put on my blog and further reduce the hurdles required to find out all about me.

@latsot – I’ve studiously avoided Pharyngula since he used the stages of horse development as examples of the different sexes of horses beyond the binary.

Yes, I know it was a joke, but another example of how flippantly he treats all of this. I had considered him, if not a close personal friend, a friend at one time. Organized the first Pharyngulafest that he actually attended, and tied a tie for him the first time he ever wore one. Had a bit of pride when he wrote up a piece about one of my blog posts in which he said I explained a concept even better than he had.

Feeling downcast about the whole thing now. Sigh. Need a hug.

@8 I wish the trans issue was something not worth losing friends over, but I do have a problem with people who are cocksure and won’t discuss things rationally, which seems to be my problem with people clinging for their lives to political and religious issues too. Not worth it, especially when they get nasty. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It is also worth pointing out that while PZ and many others are discussing this as if JKR is complaining about having her address known to the public. This is not the case, as is plain to anyone looking at what the tweeted. She mentioned the word doxxing as a means of intimidation, rather than revealing her information. Does no one look at original sources any more?

Femboy’s account is now suspended. I’m surprised it wasn’t an outright ban given that post.

    Certainly should have been.

    Michael,

I’m sorry to hear that. This shouldn’t be an issue to lose friends over.

I don’t know PZ well at all. I’ve met him thrice and only quite briefly. But it’s hard not to feel some sort of personal connection and even slight hurt when he blocked me with a sneering message instead of listening to my argument.

It also feels as though many of us invested quite a lot in supporting PZ when he stood up to what he called ‘dictionary atheists’ and promoted the idea of atheism as something progressive, as being ‘good without god’. It’s easy to forget how much abuse he and we got for that. So it does feel a bit personal when he blithely ignores the concerns of so many women and, now, descends absolutely to the level of those he previously fought.

Same here. As I’ve mentioned way too many times (but it keeps coming up) he privately aka secretly begged me not to leave FTB when the vultures were gouging out bits of me, but did nothing publicly to make that anything other than masochistic. I’ve never believed he believes the bullshit he’s talking now.

Also, I second the sorry to hear that addressed to Mike. I tried to say that yesterday but it kept looking awkward.
