I saw the description and was prepared to wince at some outflow of right-wing conspiracy nuttery, but was pleasantly surprised. However, I did end up wincing slightly at “troon.” If there was a political point to make about some overreach of legislation concerning gay/lesbian rights, you wouldn’t call them fags while making your point. I know the TRA tribe will focus on the one naughty word as a handy way of ignoring all the good points made.

Unless I miss my guess, “troon” is derived from “trans goon” in reference to the goons from Something Awful… There sure as hell have been a lot of AGPs from that demographic…
I mostly use it in reference to the sort of anti-Gamergaters that all seem to have transitioned.

While I don’t disagree that the trans control of dialogue is authoritarian, I do think that words matter. Fascism is not what this is, it’s symptomatic of a fascist state but not the defining characteristic. Words are bandied about these days as emotional triggers, but not as good descriptors. It’s like when AOC and Sanders in the U.S. talk about socialism, when they are actually referring to social support within a capitalist society.
The trans activist movement, especially among the Black Pajamas, are a would-be totalitarian movement within a free society over a specific social issue that is misogynistic in nature. But, I realize that’s kind of hard to shout out and gain attention.
I don’t disagree with her that it is dangerous and must be stopped. I am quibbling over words, but the words themselves are important. It’s much the same when I hear that Biden is a commie, or a socialist, or a whatever that all Democrats are accused of being. He’s clearly not, and when someone tells me that it is, I get hung up on the terms because it would take too long to explain to the other person that he’s got the definitions wrong.
This is why people think I’m arrogant. I recognize it and have a hard time stopping myself.
Well it’s a different meaning of “is” – which is also quibbling if you like, but then I too think quibbling over words matters. She wasn’t saying “this is the whole of fascism” but “THIS is how fascists behave [as opposed to how we behave, which is not].” It’s only about this external “how we spot fascists” argument. We don’t spot fascists by looking at women defending our rights, we spot it by looking at shouting roaring threatening men who try to stop us. Part not the whole; symptom not the disease.
Quibbling is important, than you for clarifying.

I had thought that “troon” was a portmanteau of “trans” and “cartoon,” not “trans” and “goon” (or “loon”). I had thought the word is not used because the individual is aggressive and loutish, but because he is cartoonish and bizarre, a caricature of a woman rather than a facsimile of a woman.

But I also see a lot of discussion online referring to members of an old internut forum called Something Awful referring to themselves as “goons,” and developing the term “troon” from that usage of “goon.”
I also see that there is a difference in meaning of “goon” from England to America, where it means “a stupid, foolish, or eccentric person” in the former and “a violent, aggressive person who is hired to intimidate or harm people” in the latter. I would much rather run into Spike Milligan in a dark alley than a malevolent thug.
Papito, I always thought of goon as a combination of those meanings; or alternating, depending on the situation. Perhaps that’s because I was born in the USA but read a lot of literature from England.
So which sense was Elvis Costello using in “Goon Squad”? I always thought of it in the American sense, but I could see how the English sense might fit.
