Is there anything incorrect about this statement? She’s not become Elon Musk, but we’ve all seen where Twitter poisoning and negative activism can lead. I find myself… concerned but not altogether worried.
Correct or incorrect aren’t really the issue. Hayton isn’t just making a factual observation.
Defund the tone police!
Her tone has changed, yes, but she is still not abusing anyone. She is still basically within the bounds of civil discussion. She has gotten less conciliatory, that’s all. I don’t see anything to be concerned about, but then, I don’t think women getting angry about having their rights stolen, their sex erased, and their boundaries violated is any problem. She is not threatening people with death, bodily invasion, or in fact anything. She is merely stating facts, and is getting less patient with nonsense.
And why wouldn’t her tone have changed? With all the abuse she’s gotten since 2020, the only way not to have gotten angry is to have ice water running through her veins. She becomes more passionate as they become more abusive, but that isn’t really a cause for concern.
And yeah, he wasn’t just stating facts; he was calling for online mobs. “Will no one rid me of this troublesome novelist?”

No, but that doesn’t mean that Rowling is sliding into the right wing. She’s had four years of having shit flung at her and people are complaining that not only is she not eating it, she’s getting sarcastic with the shit-flingers to boot.
Given the tone of tweets from the cultists, those part-quotes apply far more to the pro-‘trans’ side than they do to JKR. She employs sarcasm and ridicule against poisonous ideas and selfish, dangerous behaviour; they employ downright abuse, doxing, deplatforming, and threats of rape, other physical assault, and murder against women.

The 2020 essay was written four years ago. A lot has happened, a lot has been written, by JKR and others. That essay’s attempt at conciliatory language was not received well by gender ideologues; why is it in the least surprising that she didn’t bother trying to be “nice” all the damn time from then on?
Hayton is also missing the point. Rowling was not responding to the news that this man was named manager of a football club. She was responding to the gushing and widespread reports about how amazing and wonderful this appointment is, a “first”. No, it’s not a first, it’s yet another appointment of a middle-aged, white, male manager, and she is right to point out that there is less here than meets the eye. It’s not a criticism of the manager or the appointment, but rather a criticism of the fawning and reporting.
It reminds me of the appointment of Rachel Levine as an assistant cabinet secretary, in a post that carries a uniformed service rank. In the long line of men that have held that position, Levine is another one, but he was made out to be a historic “first”, most appallingly “first woman”. Complaints were not generally criticisms of Levine’s competency, but rather about the reporting and the grandiose claims.
But TiMs don’t have to be “ladylike and sweet” when demanding women’s rights. Just more asymmetrical warfare.

Maybe I’m just more sensitive because she’s one of my favorite authors rather than merely a flaming sword of vengeance against the trannies (not that I think Twitter wars accomplish much on that front). Ultimately it’s the boring job of legislatures, institutional bodies, and courts to do that work and I don’t think the keyboard warrior-ing or endless protests are the prime movers in those arenas.
Legislatures, institutional bodies, and courts don’t float entirely free of public opinion though. They may reject it or work to turn it around, but they don’t generally act as if it doesn’t matter at all. What you call Twitter wars are simply people arguing about an issue. People arguing about issues are one source of what legislatures, institutional bodies, and courts do.
“Arguing” seems overly generous to describe the endless dunkfest that happens there… On the plus side Elon seems to have cemented its drift into obscurity.
