Deepity du jour
I dropped into PCC Market this afternoon to get a loaf of bread and saw they had some sort of motto board in the little cafe area. I was curious to see what the current deepity was so I looked. It goes like this:
The future is coming this way.
Let us go out to meet it.
And then the author’s name, which I didn’t write down and don’t remember.
But: what??? That’s such wisdom it’s worth finding the alphabet blocks and pinning them on the board?
The future is the future; you don’t say!
Let’s go out to meet it??? I don’t want to be harsh but there’s no need to summon or advise us to meet it, because we have zero choice in the matter. Tomorrow is tomorrow whether we “go out to meet it” or stay in bed with pillows over our faces.
And if we did have choice in the matter – well hey, maybe going out to meet it is a shit idea. It will be just more Trump, and global warming, and children dying of measles, and pangolins gone forever. Let’s not go out to meet it, let’s go back and fix our mistakes.
Trust the journey.

You are exactly where you’re supposed to be.
The moment is now because now is the moment.
(I could keep going but I already want to punch myself right in the face, just by playfully, ironically writing out such drippy, deepity claptrap. It’s so gross!)

Well I don’t need to be told what to do by a sign in a cafe, but I guess the way I’d read it is: Things are changing, and they will continue to change whether you accept it or not; you’re not doing yourself any favours by pretending nothing’s happening. (This is me with ‘AI’.)

But I don’t think that is the right way to read it. It’s a deepity, and a deeply stupid deepity at that. It’s the old embrace change, welcome the new, turn that frown upside down, but in touchy-feely speak.
There’s a lot of this on LinkedIn, and I’ll be honest it does not inspire me to network with someone.
“The future is ahead” is a pretty common cross-linguistic metaphor, for obvious reasons. But there’s at least one language (I forget which, but I think it’s an American language) in which the future is behind, both linguistically and gesturally. The underlying logic seems to be that you can see the past, but not the future.
So I suppose their deepity would be “Watch out! The future is sneaking up on you.”
There’s a distinct ‘Waiting for the Barbarians’ vibe in that particular trope.
