Slanted and unbalanced

McConnell is breaking the knees of the proposed commission to look into that little insurrection the other month.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Wednesday that he will oppose legislation to create a commission tasked with investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol — a signal that the legislation will not have the votes to get through the Senate.

“After careful consideration, I’ve made the decision to oppose the House Democrats slanted and unbalanced proposal for another commission to study the events of January the 6th,” he said on the Senate floor.

The bipartisan commission would have an equal number of Republicans and Democrats, five on each side.

Right, so that’s slanted and unbalanced. It should be nine Republicans and one Democrat.

This actually strikes me as a misstep by the GOP. The Dems handed them a gift by agreeing to the structure of this commission, and once again the GOP proved that “bipartisanship” is a mirage. Shouldn’t be too hard now to get the D caucus on board for some regular committee investigations. If the GOP could conduct a zillion hearings into “Benghazi” and pay no political price for it, pretty sure the Dems can investigate an attempted coup.

Apparently those devious Democrats used the nefarious negotiating technique of giving into the Republicans demands for the commission, so McCarthy was left with no option but to oppose.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called McCarthy’s opposition to the commission “cowardice” and said he doesn’t want to find the truth. She released a February letter from the GOP leader in which he asked for an even split of Democrats and Republican commissioners, equal subpoena power and no predetermined findings or conclusions listed in the legislation. The bipartisan legislation accommodates all three of those requests, she said.

“Leader McCarthy won’t take yes for an answer,” she said.
