Vacancy
Oh. good. god.
Watch the expression on the interviewer’s face when Trump doesn’t know what the declaration of independence is.
Don’t migrants who apply for a citizenship have to know what the Declaration of Independence is?
Why doesn’t the president of the United States know? pic.twitter.com/ISRH0NUYWQ

It speaks a lot for the shocking incompetence of the US Democratic party, that they were able to lose to this person *TWICE*.
Trump’s bullshit improv tends to sound the same no matter what the topic; his ignorance is well-rounded. I’m surprised it didn’t involve “not many people know this,” “sir,” and “tears in his eyes.”
And, yes, Cloudy, I’d like to see the Democratic Party take a moment to recognize that, awful as Trump is, the American electorate actually likes them less, and they should do something about that instead of counting on hatred of the other guy to get them through.
They lost twice to this person when they fielded women. It’s now clear that the American electorate REALLY hates women.
@piglet I can accept that part of Clinton’s failure was due to her sex, but I always wondered if too much of her rejection was due to name recognition and that a Bush being followed by another Bush was enough to put them off a Clinton followed, after a small intergnum, by another Clinton.
And in the case of Harris, well, she was more than a woman, she was also a black woman and that gave a sizeable chunk of the voters two reasons to reject her. To many it wasn’t that long ago that they had to suffer a “Nigger in the
woodpileWhite House. It does amaze me that the Democrats seem unable to mount a credible campaign, but then I look at the education stats out of the USA and understand why it is so easy for a Trump to sway the voters against their own best interests.
On one hand, I am also of the opinion that one thing we’ve learned from the American elections is how powerful misogyny is in America (I would argue that the results show that racism is slightly less powerful now, since a Black man did win two elections). On the other hand, it wouldn’t be rocket science to develop a platform that the majority of Americans support – it’s pretty clear what most people want from their government – but the Democrats just can’t seem to be bothered to do it.
I lean towards agreeing with Mostly Cloudy and guest here, except for the caveat that I doubt even the US Democrats would have been quite so incompetent without a solid phalanx of establishment sycophants offering false reassurance that they did not need to raise their game.
There are a LOT of reasons for election losses (and wins) so it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to decide that the two women who have run were not elected because they are women.
I agree with Ophelia.
Actually, the idea that the Democrats can’t field a credible campaign is ridiculous. The Republicans can’t field a credible campaign. The problem is that the voters don’t want a credible campaign, they want an incredible one.
While the Democrats talk about policy and issues, the Republican candidate throws out shouts and hate filled epithets. The policies he proposes, such as they are, are simplistic, childish, and unworkable. They will lead to economic collapse, dictatorship, becoming a failed nation, or any combination thereof.
However, from the things I have seen and heard, I cannot reject the possibility – make that probability – that the Dems lost because they were women. Every progressive I know who did not vote for them either says something about ‘too ambitious’ or ‘not likable’. I hear nothing…literally nothing…from these people about policy.
There are also a lot of people who love to hear Trump scream hatred at people, using coarse and vulgar language, and violating all the norms not only of political correctness (which was a good idea at first but has become a straitjacket for discussion) but also violates all the norms of polite society and politics.
The reality is, whether it’s misogyny (which I am sure had at least something to do with the loss), laziness (not willing to learn about the truth), delusion (thinking they already know the truth), or simply sheer cussedness, the American system is broken. Trump is now taking a sledge hammer to what small shards remain.
The issue isn’t whether or not some people didn’t vote for Harris because she’s a woman, it’s whether or not that’s THE reason she wasn’t elected. There are a lot of reasons, because there always are, and I just don’t think we know it was because of misogyny or mostly because of misogyny.
Ophelia, when a larger proportion of the nation voted for a misogynist than Harris, I think we can include misogyny as one of the main reasons he won.
I think we can surmise from the popular vote in 2016 that a woman candidate is perfectly viable. Not to mention the women heads of state globally, particularly in Europe. I agree with Ophelia. Not that misogyny or patriarchy isn’t a factor, but that it’s not the deciding one.
Rev David – Well what you say is not very different from what I said. I don’t think we know it was because of misogyny or mostly because of misogyny. That’s compatible with thinking it was one of the reasons, and even one of the main reasons.
