  • They helped mislead investors and buyers

Speaking of Ivanka Trump, and the other Trumps – ProPublica published a big story yesterday on their criminal activities over the last couple of decades. It’s about all these international property deals, which they have said are just branding exercises with no actual involvement. Not true, says ProPublica.

The Trumps were typically way more than mere licensors or bystanders in their often-troubled deals. They were deeply involved in these projects. They helped mislead investors and buyers — and they profited handsomely from it.

Patterns of deceptive practices occurred in a dozen deals across the globe, as the business expanded into international projects, and the Trumps often participated. One common pattern, visible in more than half of those transactions, was a tendency to misstate key sales numbers.

In interviews and press conferences, Ivanka Trump gave false sales figures for projects in Mexico’s Baja California; Panama City, Panama; Toronto and New York’s SoHo neighborhood. These statements weren’t just the legendary Trump hype; they misled potential buyers about the viability of the developments.

    Can you say “felony fraud”?

Not so much the most competent to be US Ambassador to the UN as a crook who lies to potential buyers to get them to overpay for dud properties. There was that project in Panama City that flopped, for instance.

Trump touted himself as a “partner” of the developer. His daughter Ivanka briefly boasted that she had personally sold 40 units. (A broker on the project said he couldn’t remember her selling even one.) Meanwhile, Ivanka told a journalist at the time that “over 90 percent” of the Panama units had sold — and at prices five times as high as comparable buildings. Both statements were untrue.

Not only were the Panama sales figures inflated, but many “purchases” turned out to be an illusion. That was no coincidence. The building’s financing depended on obtaining advance commitments from buyers, often before concrete had started pouring. But in between the sale of the bonds in 2007 and 2013, the year the building went bankrupt, buyers of 458 units in the 1,000-unit building abandoned their purchase contracts. Those buyers forfeited more than $50 million in deposits, and they never took possession of finished units. Given that the “buyers” were often shadowy shell companies or other paper entities, it was nearly impossible to discern who the actual purchasers were, let alone why they backed out.

Trumps “forfeiting” deposits that they had paid themselves via shell companies to lure in real buyers?

They’re skilled at being crooks, I’ll give them that.

  • Ivanka, smiling away at the rank homophobia surrounding her

Princess Ivanka has been hanging with the godbotherers.

It was an evening that featured a room full of LGBT prejudice and hatred, and in the photographs Ivanka Trump, alleged one-time supporter of LGBT equality, looked like she was enjoying every second.

Jim Garlow, senior pastor of Skyline Wesleyan Church in San Diego, had the most pictorially successful evening at President Trump’s dinner for around 100 evangelical leaders held in the White House’s State Dining Room.

Garlow, whose passionate hatred of LGBT people appears as powerful as his taste for selfies, managed to get his picture taken with President Trump, Melania Trump, Karen and Mike Pence, Jared Kushner, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Kellyanne Conway, and—most surprising of all, given that past professed support for LGBT people—Ivanka Trump.

Surprising not surprising. She’s in it for herself, for the money and fame. If that means snuggling up to homophobic preachers, then that’s what it means.

Ivanka, smiling away at the rank homophobia surrounding her, also had her picture taken with former Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), who likes to invoke “Sodom and Gomorrah” and “this day of wickedness,” and who has talked about the State Department’s “evil” in pursuing a “gay agenda”—meaning helping persecuted and vulnerable LGBTQ people in other countries.

Aw but look, she cleans up so nice. That’s all that really matters, isn’t it?

Other guests at the dinner included Franklin Graham, Billy Graham’s son, who first questioned President Obama’s Christianity (later apologizing for doing so), then accused him of “shaking his fist” at God for supporting same-sex marriage.

Ralph Reed, former head of the Christian Coalition turned founder and chair of the Faith and Freedom Coalition, was also there.

Reed has spent a career fulminating against LGBT people, from legislation against hate crimes to same-sex parenting, and describing the overturning of the Defense of Marriage Act as an “Orwellian act of judicial fiat.”

These evangelical leaders and their fervent flocks have now found, in Pence and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, two supremely powerful agents of government as keen as they are to pursue conservative social policies. In Trump, they have found a president desperate to maintain a base of support, which they offer.

Pastor Jeffress told CBN that Trump had a 77 percent approval rating among evangelicals and was “the most pro-life, pro-religious liberty, and pro-conservative judiciary president in history which is why evangelicals continue to support him enthusiastically.”

The pussy-grabbing, the lies, the insults, the bullying, the corruption, the separation of children from parents – none of that matters, because he helps them impose their reactionary religious beliefs on everyone. Amen.

  • A commitment to the work she is doing

Princess Ivanka has decided to close down her “fashion brand.” Her explanation is that she owes it to her Important Work.

In a statement, Ms. Trump characterized the move as being driven by a commitment to the work she is doing as part of her father’s administration.

“After 17 months in Washington, I do not know when or if I will ever return to the business,” Ms. Trump said, “but I do know that my focus for the foreseeable future will be the work I am doing here in Washington, so making this decision now is the only fair outcome for my team and partners.”

The “work” she is doing – what work? What work can she do? She has no relevant education or training or experience. She got her “job” through blatant nepotism, contrary to a law against exactly that, and there’s no reason on earth to think she’s competent to do it. It’s all their big stupid game of let’s pretend, and it’s annoying. It’s also corrupt, of course, but even putting that aside the pretentiousness coupled with the emptiness is annoying.

Ms. Trump’s decision comes as the Trump administration threatens to escalate its trade dispute with China, where many of her products are manufactured.

    MAGA notwithstanding.

Since Mr. Trump was elected president, members of his family have faced continuing criticism that they were exploiting his position to promote their personal interests.

    No, really?

Almost since the moment Ms. Trump arrived in Washington, there were questions about whether she and her father’s advisers might be using her new prominence to advance her business interests.

Shortly after the election, people working on behalf of Ms. Trump’s brand promoted a $10,800 bracelet she wore during an interview broadcast on CBS’s “60 Minutes,” prompting accusations that the Trump family planned to treat the White House as something like the cable shopping network QVC.

Trump himself is merrily promoting his golf clubs while on duty.

In a statement on Tuesday, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics, a Washington group that has been especially vocal in questioning what it called the Trump family’s blurring of business interests and government work, offered muted approval for Ms. Trump’s move.

“While this is a notable step in the right direction, it’s a small one that comes much too late,” the statement said, adding that Ms. Trump had “reportedly realized that there were too many potential conflicts of interest to avoid, something many observers warned about from the beginning.”

It’s almost as if in addition to being untrained for government work she’s also not very bright.

  • To manufacture 140,000 pairs of shoes

One rule for Them, another rule for Us.

Donald Trump’s tariffs on Chinese goods won’t touch Ivanka Trump’s foreign-made products for her fashion line.

While Trump rails at Harley-Davidson motorcycles for moving some production to Europe to dodge EU tariffs, the first daughter and senior White House adviser has never manufactured a single product for her Ivanka Trump brand on American soil.

Because it’s so much cheaper to outsource manufacturing to countries where wages are even lower than they are here.

Trump enacted tariffs Friday morning on $34 billion worth of Chinese goods, affecting hundreds of products from boats to medical devices and auto parts. Products spared include those manufactured by his daughter.

That means Chengdu Kameido Shoes in Sichuan province can continue to supply shoes for the Ivanka Trump brand as it has in the past. It’s currently bidding for a new contract to manufacture 140,000 pairs of shoes for Trump’s company, a spokesman told The South China Morning Post.

I’m sure there’s some convincing explanation that has to do with a technical skill that no one in the US has but millions of people in Sichuan province rejoice in.

Until January 2017 all of Ivanka Trump’s products were made in factories in China and Hong Kong, research director Chris Rogers at Panjiva, a global trade data tracking company headquartered in New York, told Politico. Since then, some manufacturing has apparently been moved to other overseas factories in Indonesia, South Korea and Vietnam.

Only people in East Asia know how to make vulgar shoes for low wages. It’s a very geographically-specific skill.

Other enterprises and workers in the U.S., meanwhile, are already feeling the heat from a trade war. China’s retaliatory tariffs have targeted U.S. seafood, soybeans, dairy products, cars, apples, whiskey, pet food and cigarettes, among several other products. Farmers are fearful they won’t be able to sell products they had earmarked for China. They also worry that suppliers from other countries will pick up the valuable market — for good — that they have worked for years to cultivate.

“Soybeans are the top agriculture export for the United States, and China is the top market for purchasing those exports,” Iowa soybean grower John Heisdorffer said in a statement. “The math is simple. You tax soybean exports at 25 percent, and you have serious damage to U.S. farmers.”

Despite the president’s mantra to “buy American and hire American” the Trump family retains major business operations overseas, and the Trump Organization continues to manufacture most Trump products in foreign factories.

Why it’s almost as if they’re morals-free tacky money-grubbing profit-seeking lying thieving grifters.

  • Same day service

    Huh. What a coincidence.

Ivanka Trump’s company won approval for three Chinese trademarks on the same day her father agreed to lift sanctions on ZTE, a Chinese telecommunications company that even a key Trump security adviser admitted is a national security threat.

According to records reviewed by the government watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), Ivanka’s business “received registration approval for three additional Chinese trademarks on June 7, 2018.”

President Trump struck a deal with ZTE on June 7, 2018.

The very same day. They’re taunting us, aren’t they.

Last year, Ivanka won provisional approval for three Chinese trademarks on the same day she dined with Chinese President Xi Jinping at her father’s Mar-a-Lago estate, allowing Ivanka Trump Marks LLC to sell activewear, jewelry, bags, and spa services under the first daughter’s name. Days after the meeting, the president broke a major campaign promise to punish China for being a currency manipulator and denying that it was manipulating its currency at all.

Trump had called China “world champions” of currency manipulation a mere 10 days earlier.

The president’s daughter recently reported she earned $82 million last year, partially from her ownership of her businesses. She also reported debts and liabilities in the undefined range of millions of dollars. Before she started working at the White House, she gave up official positions in her business, handing it over to a trust managed by members of her family, but she still retains ownership and benefits from any profits.

    Greedy, aren’t they.

  • Weaponized graciousness

Emily Nussbaum two years ago on Princess Ivanka:

Ivanka’s made the choice to use her gifts to prop up her father’s ugly and xenophobic campaign, employing her charm as a kind of weaponized graciousness. She’s his consort, because Melania can’t be. And could Donald be bad, if Ivanka is good? Where Donald is rude, Ivanka is polite. Where Donald makes piggish insults, Ivanka shrugs: “Oh, Dad!” In last night’s seductive speech, with her corporate-P.R.-wiz delivery, she offered the same anodyne generalizations that her siblings and stepmother made in their speeches. Her dad inspired them; he taught good values; he can be trusted. It was like a Mad Libs compiled from Successories motivational posters…

If he inspired them, he inspired them to be greedy and crooked; he did not teach good values; he cannot be trusted. She lies just as he does.

Before Ivanka’s performance, her brother, Donald, Jr., predicted that his sister would succeed, because she “does the princess thing very well.” Her royalty is what makes her father’s royalty feel real. You’re not supposed to criticize someone’s daughter—and, if the press does, Trump will surely be able to score points by defending her. But this is the ugly truth: Ivanka has made a conscious choice to deodorize the stink of her father’s misogyny, to suggest that because he loves her that means he loves women—to erase the actual policies he supports. She could have stood by his side and smiled in mere family solidarity. She could have used her newborn or her work as an excuse to stay away from active campaigning. Instead, she’s stepped forward to blind female voters to who her father is and what he stands for.

    And she’s still doing it.

  • A big pile of quids

Oh look, more blatant corruption and conflict of interest – more using the office of president to put more millions in the pockets of Donald Trump or family members of Donald Trump.

Ivanka Trump’s business has won approval from the Chinese government for at least five new trademarks. The approval came just days before President Donald Trump announced he was working on a controversial deal to drop U.S. prohibitions against China cellphone manufacturer ZTE.

    Quid pro quo much?

Another trademark was given trial approval. The trademarks grant Ivanka Trump operations exclusive rights to market a variety of products in China that could potentially amount to millions of dollars in profits. Ivanka Trump Marks LLC received approval last year for several other trademarks after she began working in the White House. Three of them were granted the same day she dined with Chinese President Xi Jinping at Mar-a-Lago.

The applications for the trademarks were submitted over a year ago, and the trademark registrations were accepted May 7. Just five days later Trump announced he was working on a deal to lift U.S. business barriers against ZTE in order to save Chinese jobs.

    Filthy enough?

Meanwhile, some 72 hours before his tweet about ZTE, China quietly agreed to loan $500 million to an Indonesian theme park project in which the president is a partner. Chinese banks agreed to loan an additional $500 million to the project.

The non-profit Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, D.C., said the trademark deal again raises concerns about the Trump family’s international businesses and potential conflicts of interest.

    Make Ivanka Rich Again.

  • Their reputation as savvy dealmakers

Princess Ivanka and Prince Jared tried to get Planned Parenthood to stop providing abortion services in exchange for more $$$.

[Cecile] Richards, who is planning on stepping down as president [of PP] in 2018, reveals in her new book that the President’s daughter and son-in-law offered her an increase in federal funding for Planned Parenthood in exchange for its agreement to stop providing abortion services, according to People magazine.

“Jared and Ivanka were there for one reason: to deliver a political win,” Richards writes in “Make Trouble: Standing Up, Speaking Out, and Finding the Courage to Lead,” which was released Tuesday, People reported. “In their eyes, if they could stop Planned Parenthood from providing abortions, it would confirm their reputation as savvy dealmakers. It was surreal, essentially being asked to barter away women’s rights for more money.”

Yes but more money. Who doesn’t want more money? Planned Parenthood could buy a luxury penthouse on 5th Avenue, and who doesn’t want that? More money, I tell you!

Richards told CNN’s Erin Burnett in an interview Tuesday that she thinks Ivanka Trump isn’t being a champion for women in her role as senior adviser to her father, the President.

“If her job is to advocate for women, I don’t think she’s done a very good job,” Richards said. “And particularly when it comes to women’s rights, we need a strong advocate in this White House.”

That’s never going to be Princess Ivanka.

  • I can haz test toob

While Prince Jared is wondering if he’s really in deep doo-doo over those falsified building permits, Princess Ivanka is off pretending to be A Scientist.

She’s a fashion marketer, so what she has to offer anyone on subjects like infrastructure or wtf is in this tube-thing, god only knows. #Nepotism baby!

  • She washes and gilds all she touches

Virginia Heffernan points out that corruption requires the legitimate world to protect its gains. Star witness: Princess Ivanka.

Crooks seeking legitimacy are not fenced out in America. The U.S. is teeming with enablers champing at the bit to serve rich thugs: lawyers, lobbyists, bankers, security firms, consultants and PR people.

Like Paul Manafort for instance, and like…Princess Ivanka.

Oh, Ivanka. Her livelihood is as opaque as her full-coverage foundation, but she plays a critical role in her father’s administration — and in the broader danse macabre of corruption and legitimacy.

The foundation dig is cruel but warranted – I noticed when watching that clip the other day where Princess rebukes the “inappropriate question” about the King’s pussygrabbing: she’s absolutely plastered in makeup, as if wearing a clay mask. It’s somewhat creepy.

The so-called first daughter proves that “laundering” applies to more than money. She washes and gilds just about everything she touches. Consider her warehouses upon warehouses of petroleum-based separates, many of them sewn for poverty pay in sweatshops. When you call this schmatte smorgasboard the Ivanka Trump Collection it does brisk business — if not on Rodeo Drive, then in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

It’s impossible to keep track of all the gangsters Ivanka has palled around with. But what’s truly damning are the shady real-estate projects she has made rise and go forth.

In 2006, she oversaw the development of the Trump Ocean Club International Hotel and Tower in Panama City. The project was connected to a Brazilian money launderer later arrested for fraud and forgery as well as a Russian investor who’d previously been jailed in Israel for kidnapping…

Ivanka was also a ranking official on the Trump SoHo, which has since shed the name Trump. In 2010, as ProPublica and WNYC have reported, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office began building a criminal case against Ivanka and Donald Trump Jr. for using inflated sales figures to defraud prospective buyers. After receiving a visit from Trump family lawyer and campaign donor Marc Kasowitz, then-DA Cyrus Vance Jr. backed off.

There’s more, there’s Trump International Hotel and Tower in Vancouver, which the FBI is now investigating.

When an organization exists not to build buildings but to brand them, its business is optics. And Ivanka has long window-dressed the Trump Organization’s deals. She was born to make the shoddy look cute, to legitimize corruption.

And if it’s the coverup and not the crime that will ultimately bring down the Trump syndicate, Ivanka may turn out to be the point person for its demise.

    Sad.

  • Fastidious

    See update at the end.

They really do think they’re royalty.

Celebrity chef, activist, and Trump agitator José Andrés was reportedly asked to leave a party Saturday night because his presence was making First Daughter Ivanka Trump uncomfortable.

A party at a restaurant, not at someone’s house.

Former Mexican ambassador to China Jorge Guajardo said on Twitter Sunday morning that Andrés was in fact asked to leave because “his presence made Ivanka Trump uncomfortable.”

According to Guajardo, when Ivanka arrived at the party, Cafe Milano owner Franco Nuschesse asked to speak with Andrés outside and then Andrés was not allowed back in.

That’s literal princess behavior. Empty-headed shoe-marketer Ivanka Trump mustn’t be “uncomfortable” therefore pesky foreigners with Spanish names must be thrown out.

José Andrés is that guy who backed out of a restaurant deal with Donald because Donald is such a racist pig. If Princess Ivanka feels “uncomfortable” about that maybe she should focus on what it is about her daddy that makes her feel not as comfy as she likes. If she can’t do that she should suck it up rather than using her unearned and unmerited influence to get people thrown out of parties.

In 2015, after Trump announced his candidacy and made racist comments about Mexicans, Andrés pulled out of a restaurant deal. He had planned to open a new Spanish-Japanese joint in D.C.’s Trump hotel, and he had reportedly worked on the restaurant design with Ivanka Trump herself. But it fell apart after Trump’s racist remarks, and the Trump Organization sued.

The parties reached a settlement last spring.

In the months since, Andrés has been spending much of his time feeding people in need in Puerto Rico, where the island is still feeling the effects of a devastating hurricane season. The chef developed a network of kitchens, supply chains, and delivery services, serving up more than 2.2 million warm meals to people in Puerto Rico.

As The New York Times put it, “No other single agency — not the Red Cross, the Salvation Army nor any government entity — has fed more people freshly cooked food since the hurricane, or done it in such a nurturing way.”

And that’s the guy the plastic princess kicked out of a party.

    God I hate them.

    Update: Think Progress updated:

UPDATE: Cafe Milano owner Franco Nuschesse tweeted Sunday afternoon in response to claims that José Andrés was removed from a party at the restaurant, saying that Andrés “is always welcome” and that Ivanka Trump played no role in the “misunderstanding” that resulted in Andrés being removed.

Princess Ivanka apparently told him it wasn’t her doing, but not on Twitter so we can’t see.

  • Would you like that in a 12 or 14?

    Glorious glorious nepotism.

She markets clothes. That’s all. She’s just one of those people who make a living from “branding” and promotion and hype, exploiting her last name to make her tat seem more exciting than it is. If she were on Project Runway she’d be Out in the first round. She has no business at all “meeting with” India’s head of state.

  • A few dollars a day for long hours

Princess Ivanka is in Hyderabad pretending to be an important person who Advocates for stuff, but the veneer is too thin to be convincing.

Ivanka Trump called Tuesday for greater efforts to help women start businesses and contribute to the global economy, but there was no mention of her company’s use of low-wage garment workers.

Empower women! Boop boop!! But pay no attention to those peasant women working for pennies an hour in my factories.

To some, her appeals for women empowerment contrasted sharply with her own business practices.

Ivanka Trump’s apparel company, which she still controls, exclusively relies on foreign factories in places such as Bangladesh, Indonesia, China and India, where mostly female workers are paid a few dollars a day for long hours, industry experts have said. Earlier this year, The Washington Post found that Trump’s apparel company lags behind many others in the industry in the way it monitors treatment of its workers, most of them women.

Never mind that! Empower women! Ivanka is right-on!

She headlined an event focused on uplifting and supporting women entrepreneurs, but there was no mention of her apparel company’s use of low-wage workers in India and other countries to stitch her clothes.

Entrepreneurs and business leaders praised Ivanka Trump, describing her as an elegant and professional working mother who built her own business and has been a strong advocate for women.

“She is a very fierce and independent woman. That’s what I admire about her,” said Renuka Diwan, co-founder of an agriculture start-up in Pune. “She’s successful in her own right. Nobody has to introduce her as Donald Trump’s daughter. She has made a name for herself.”

Uh, no. She’s not, they did, she didn’t. If she weren’t Donald Trump’s daughter no one would pay the slightest attention to her. She markets dull, mediocre clothes, end of story. Without Daddy she might be a buyer for Bloomingdale’s, or maybe Target.

She touted the administration’s work reducing “job-crushing regulations” that hurt small business owners, its proposal for paid family leave and her efforts to lobby to pass tax cuts.

“We must ensure that women entrepreneurs have access to capital, access to networks and mentors and access to equitable laws,” she said. She noted that if India closed its labor force gender gap by half, the economy could grow by $150 billion in three years.

But don’t expect her to pay higher wages. She’s far too busy lobbying for tax cuts that will make her that bit richer.

Women make up less than 25 percent of the enrollment in higher education, notes Vijayaraghavan M. Chariar, a professor of rural development and technology at the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi.

“There are a few success stories but there are very serious issues of patriarchy and gender stereotyping that are preventing a lot more creative women from joining the ranks of entrepreneurs,” Chariar said.

Ivanka Trump, he went on “is a nice Barbie doll. Everybody wants to have a picture taken with her. But there are much more substantial women who are entrepreneurs we ought to be celebrating.”

Well, she’s a Barbie doll. I doubt she’s nice, given her associations.

  • Snubbed

Princess Ivanka, wholly unqualified and uneducated as she is, is going to India to pretend she’s a real diplomat, but Tillerson isn’t playing along. Tillerson is wholly unqualified and uneducated too and I think he has no business being in that job, but I think he’s right not to help Princess I pretend she represents the State Department.

Days ahead of what should be a major moment for Ivanka Trump on the world stage, CNN has learned Secretary of State Rex Tillerson isn’t sending a high-level delegation to support her amid reports of tensions between Tillerson and the White House.

Multiple State Department officials, as well as a source close to the White House, have told CNN Tillerson’s decision not to send senior State Department officials to this year’s Global Entrepreneurship Summit, being held in India next week, is not related to his key project of slashing the Department’s budget, and is more to do with the fact Ivanka Trump is leading the US delegation this year. Trump was invited by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June, and this year’s theme is supporting women entrepreneurs.

The State Department puts on the large yearly event, which Secretary of State John Kerry and even President Obama attended multiple times. But this year, according to one senior State Department official: “No one higher than the deputy assistant secretary is allowed to participate. The secretary and his top staff have insisted on approving all travel– even the most minute details.”

“They (Tillerson and his staff) won’t send someone senior because they don’t want to bolster Ivanka. It’s now another rift between the White House and State at a time when Rex Tillerson doesn’t need any more problems with the President,” the official added.

Can you blame them? She’s the president’s kid, and she has no relevant experience or knowledge. Bobby Kennedy was at least a lawyer.

“Rex doesn’t like the fact that he’s supposed to be our nation’s top diplomat, and Jared and now Ivanka have stepped all over Rex Tillerson for a long time,” the source said. “So now, he’s not sending senior people from the State Department to support this issue. He’s not supporting Ivanka Trump.”

Maybe if they sent Trump’s car or one of his overcoats instead of Ivanka it wouldn’t be so bad.

  • Republican leaders were visibly annoyed by Ivanka’s presence

This is a small thing, and yet…it’s so infuriating.

There was an important White House meeting today with Congressional leaders to discuss raising the debt ceiling. (Trump, probably confused, did what Pelosi and Schumer wanted instead of what Ryan and McConnell wanted. The latter two are not best pleased. Trump was probably composing a tweet at the time and lost track of which party was which.) It was serious grownup government business.

Another aide briefed on the meeting said that toward its conclusion, Ivanka Trump entered the room to say hello to the leaders and the discussion veered off-track. “Republican leaders were visibly annoyed by Ivanka’s presence,” the aide said. (A Ryan spokeswoman replied: “That’s not true.”)

To say hello for god’s sake.

You know, Amy Carter and Chelsea Clinton were young girls when their fathers were president. I don’t recall ever hearing that they bounced into meetings with Congressional leaders “to say hello to the leaders.” Malia and Sasha Obama were even younger: ten and six at the start. Again, as far as I know, they understood that they weren’t supposed to drop in to say hello to Daddy’s friends the senators and representatives. Yet here is Princess Ivanka age 35 and she feels entitled to sit in for Daddy at a meeting of global heads of state and to interrupt government business to fucking say hello?

    This isn’t cute.

  • Architect this

The reviews for Princess Ivanka’s “book” are rolling in and they’re not what you’d call raves. Some samples:

Take The New York Times, which called it “a strawberry milkshake of inspirational quotes” and “witlessly derivative, endlessly recapitulating the wisdom of other, canonical self-help and business books — by Stephen Covey, Simon Sinek, Shawn Achor, Adam Grant. (Profiting handsomely off the hard work of others appears to be a signature Trumpian trait.)”

Or the Washington Postwhose reviewer Ruth Marcus wrote, “If there is an original thought in the book, it is well-hidden among new-agey platitudes (“writing a personal mission statement is an incredibly valuable way to begin”) and repackaged wisdom: Nelson Mandela, Sheryl Sandberg, Jane Goodall, more Stephen Covey than anyone should have to reread, a woman who spiralizes vegetables.” She sums it up as “a parodic pastiche of the upper-middle-class-working-mom self-help genre.”

Your typical upper-middle-class working mother whose father is the worst person in the world and the president of the US.

The Huffington Post’s Emily Peck mocks Trump’s idea that her success is due to her hard work and not her privileged position as the daughter of a very rich man. Women who Work, she writes, “is a grab-bag of generic work-life advice for upper-middle-class white women who need to ‘architect’ (a verb that pops up a lot) their lives. But underneath that, and perhaps more remarkable, is Trump’s inability to truly recognize how her own privileged upbringing was key to her success.”

    How like Daddy!

Fatima Goss Graves writing in U.S. News & World Report echoes the Huffington Post, focusing on the women left out of Trump’s vision. “The how-to-succeed model in Women Who Work overlooks the complexities of overlapping sex and race bias that drive lower pay and fewer opportunities for many women,” she writes, adding. “This can-do message sounds appealing and easy to accomplish. But millions of women are in no position to follow any of this advice.”

    Well they don’t count, duh.

  • The international project of flattering Ivanka Trump

Amy Davidson in the New Yorker looks at the abject process of paying homage to Princess Ivanka.

The international project of flattering Ivanka Trump—which some of the world’s most notable women, from Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of Germany, to Queen Máxima, of the Netherlands, engaged in at a panel discussion during the W20 conference, in Berlin, this week—does not always run smoothly. There was, first, the achingly obvious oddity of deciding that Trump, whose experience on the public stage largely consists of marketing her clothing and jewelry lines, and her efforts to get her father, Donald Trump, elected, was qualified to sit between Christine Lagarde, the head of the International Monetary Fund, and Chrystia Freeland, the Foreign Minister of Canada. That was quickly followed by the dispiriting thought that Trump might actually have as much power over people’s lives as the other women, through the influence that she supposedly wields over her father. Why else would the head of the World Bank, Jim Yong Kim, have co-authored an op-ed in the Financial Times with her, on the importance of promoting female entrepreneurship? Their insights include this: “mentorship opportunities and access to networks bring learning opportunities and connections to capital and markets.”

Ooh, you don’t say. Thank fuck we have Ivanka to explain us that.

At some point during her Berlin sojourn, Trump spoke to Mike Allen, the political journalist. Allen ran an item on Axios with the headline “Ivanka Trump’s new fund for female entrepreneurs,” illustrated with a photograph of Trump grazing her fingers on one of the slabs that make up Berlin’s Holocaust memorial. “Ivanka Trump told me yesterday from Berlin that she has begun building a massive fund that will benefit female entrepreneurs around the globe,” Allen wrote.

It sounded like a very big deal, until people started asking questions.

What about conflicts? Would this be a for-profit operation or a shakedown one? In a few hours, it became clear that it was neither of those—because “Ivanka Trump’s new fund” was a complete misnomer. This would be a World Bank project, as spokesmen for the White House and the bank emphasized. Trump would not be involved in raising money, managing it, or deciding how it would be spent. But the World Bank wanted everyone to know that it was very, very grateful to Ivanka for promoting the fund, or “facility,” as it would be called. It was kind of her idea.

Why are any journalists confused about this? She’s like her father – she’s a marketer. That’s all. She’s not a genius of policy or global empowerment of women – she’s a fashion marketer.

But maybe the make-believe about Ivanka coming up with world-changing ideas is harmless, if it means that her father will look kindly on the World Bank—although a report, this week, in the Washington Post about the conditions in a Chinese factory run by the contractor who makes her brand’s clothes (extremely low wages and long hours) does not quite fit into the picture.

I read that report in the Post. It’s grim. Funny how Ivanka’s not empowering those women.

There was that panel in Berlin…

“You’re the ‘First Daughter’ of the United States,” [Miriam Meckel] said to Trump. “And you’re also an assistant to the U.S. President. As a part of the audience, especially the German audience, is not that familiar with the concept of a First Daughter, I’d like to ask you, what is your role, and whom are you representing: Your father, as the President of the United States; the American people; or your business?”

“Well, certainly not the latter,” Trump said, smiling. “I am rather unfamiliar with this role as well, as it is quite new to me. It has been a little under a hundred days, but it has just been a remarkable and incredible journey.” She continued to speak about how good the trip to Berlin was turning out to be for her, as a learning experience, and then moved on to her real job, which has always been marketing Donald J. Trump. “I’m very, very proud of my father’s advocacy, long before he came into the Presidency, but during the campaign, including in the primaries. He’s been a tremendous champion of supporting families and enabling them to thrive in the new reality of a duelling—”

“You hear the reaction from the audience,” Meckel interrupted. According to press reports, the sound from the crowd was somewhere between a gasp, a boo, and a hiss. Meckel asked Trump to comment on “some attitudes toward women your father has publicly displayed” and how those might raise doubts about his commitment to empowering women.

“I’ve certainly heard the criticism from the media, and that’s been perpetuated,” Trump said, but added that her own experience, and that of women who worked for him, demonstrated otherwise.

I wish someone had insisted that she explain herself at that point. It’s not just “the criticism from the media” – it’s that tape. It’s that tape that we’ve all listened to, that tape that Trump dismissed brutally as “locker room talk” (as if that makes it just fine), that tape on which he brags about being able to grab women by the pussy. It’s disgusting that she skirted around that with “I’ve certainly heard the criticism from the media.”

When asked, more specifically, how she advised him, she said, “It’s been an ongoing discussion I’ve had with my father most of my adult life, and we’re very aligned in many, many areas. And that’s why he’s encouraged me to fully lean into this opportunity and come into the White House and be by his side.” The implication was that nepotism was one of her father’s virtues, and proof of his good character.

Exactly. That “he’s encouraged me to fully lean into this opportunity” is revolting. Melania’s lawsuit against the Daily Mail and a blogger also cited her “opportunities” – to make huge amounts of money because her husband is president. These people are sleazy all the way down.
