    I think (could be wrong) dam engineering has already been pushed into taking environmental impacts into account a whole lot more. It’s been a huge issue here in the Pacific Northwest because of the importance of salmon. For instance…there’s a lock a couple of miles from where I’m sitting that transfers boats and small ships from a salt water inlet to a canal that empties into Lake Washington on the other side of the city. It added a salmon ladder decades ago after it was belatedly realized that the lock was preventing salmon from reaching their spawning grounds.
